Renewables are very attractive to isolated islands as they often have to deal with constraints unusual for more connected areas. Shipping costs are more expensive, there are less resources for immediate resources.
Unsurprisingly, renewables are very attractive to islands – a dispersed grid and the fuel (steam, wind, solar) is locally available. For this reason, islands like Hawaii are particularly aggressive in integrating renewables into their existing infrastructure and proactive in implementing new solutions and optimization.
So it’s not surprising that Hawaii has just opened bidding for one of the largest energy storage projects in US.
Pretty cool.
