Lookings like a “sustainable hole” in aquaponics will be closed

The “sustainable hole” (unsustainable) aspect of many aquaponics operations is the fish feed.  It often contains fish which are captured from the wild.  Further degrading the wild fish population to raise “sustainable fish” undermines a large part of the sustainability aspect of aquaponics.

There are groups looking into closing this “hole”, with a rather simple idea.  Why not use insects?  A company, Agriprotein, has set up a facility to raise fly larvae as food.  Larvae are great recyclers, eating most waste, and the facility will act as a waste disposal unit, taking food waste and turning it into animals feed.

I am very happy to see this development because I think it has great potential to not only increase the sustainability of aquaponics, but our food industry in general.
