So, again, I apologize for having disappeared for so long.
Move cities, move apartments (three times in my case – don’t ask), start a new job… and everything just falls out the window.
Good news here is that I got a job in something that I am really passionate about and is pretty nerdy (coincidentally, I notice a large correlation between these factors in my life)…
Energy Analytics…. where energy use and conservation meet big data.
It’s a relatively new industry and is a interesting mix of statistical analysis, energy analysis and smart “things”, be it meters, thermostats, etc.
Basically, the sophistication to measure energy use is rising – it used to be a building or facility would have a single meter – even if it was huge like a municipal water treatment plant. And all that meter would tell you was consumption. Basically, you used this much energy from time A to time B.
Kind of like catching the score of a game after the fact – sure Kings 5 Devils 2 tells you some information, but you have no idea how his result came about.
Smart meters on the other hand can record data and give you information in intervals small as minutes – so you can see how much you use at night vs. the day for instance.
Combine the new capabilities of meters with a “smarter” smarter communication system, that can relay the smart meter information digitally across networks….
And your ability to provide sophisticated analysis goes way up.
A facility manager can suddenly see the impact when a shift ends and everybody plugs in their rechargeable devices at once.
Interesting stuff…
